Bonsai has been a familiar and cultural element in Japan since the Heian period (794-1185). Among the types of bonsai, the pine has been the most popular for it's year-round foliage, symbolizing good fortune and longevity. The five-leaf pine tree, or "goyomatsu", is a tree of good omen and means 'wait for your duty', and 'may good work come to you'. This is all is derived from a wordplay on the Japanese word “goyomatsu,” meaning 'wait for your duty' and makes this a popular motif amongst business people.
