This model spotlights and captures the essence of the maverick Toshiie Maeda, a military commander famous for being both a master spearman and the right-hand man of the shogun. He went by the name 'Mataza', given to him on his coming-of-age day, and was feared by one-and-all on the battlefield for his prowess with the spear.
He ruled the area called Kaga (present day Ishikawa prefecture), which is now famous for its gold leaf production, and the the gold stitching and design on the leather patch are an homage to this traditional craft and industry. The buttons feature a plum and pine motif, pine being pronounced "matsu" in Japanese, which was also the name of his wife. The plum was his family's crest.
